Two Billerica paramedics are being credited after spotting a house fire in Lowell early Friday and helping wake the people inside so they could get out safely.
Billerica Police Chief Roy Frost said in a statement Sunday that Enrick “Nick” Nuttoli and Danika Connors were returning to Billerica from a call at Lowell General Hospital at about 3:30 a.m. Friday.
As they drove down School Street in Lowell, they saw flames shooting from the second floor of a two-family home with no lights on. They took that as a sign that nobody inside was awake or aware of the fire.
The paramedics alerted Billerica dispatch, and the information was passed to the Lowell E-911 Communications Center.
While other first responders were on the way, Nuttoli and Connors went to the side of the building and started knocking on doors and banging on windows to get the attention of anyone inside and wake anyone who was asleep.
All six residents got out of the building without any reported injuries, and Frost said that happened because of the paramedics’ actions.
“The actions taken by these paramedics exemplify professionalism, awareness and a commitment to protecting life,” Frost said. “In a situation such as this, every second matters. Their quick thinking and willingness to act in a dangerous situation undoubtedly prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.”
