Olivia Munn says one night out during cancer treatment turned into the moment John Mulaney proposed.

In an exclusive PEOPLE in 10 interview, Munn said she had not been feeling great after four rounds of surgery following her bilateral breast cancer diagnosis in April 2023. She decided to attend friend James Marsden’s 50th birthday party in September 2023 anyway.

“I was not feeling like myself and feeling pretty or anything like that, but I thought this was a great opportunity for me to get dressed up and go somewhere and just see how I feel,” Munn, 45, recalled.

She said getting ready for the party helped.

“I got all glammed up and did everything, and I was like, ‘Okay, I feel my best.’ And I went to his party, and it was such a fun party, and I had such a great time,” she said.

Munn said that same night, her now-husband proposed at their hotel.

“He was like, ‘I knew that you would want to feel really great, and I wanted to give you that moment. I didn’t know when it would be, but when you said you wanted to go to this birthday party and give yourself a chance to get dressed up, I thought, ‘This is the perfect time to do it,’ “ she said.

Munn said the timing made the proposal especially meaningful.

“So, it’s like, if I didn’t go to that party, he would have eventually proposed, but it was just, it would not have happened that day in that moment, and it was just such a perfect, perfect moment,” Munn added.

Munn and Mulaney, 43, married over Fourth of July weekend in 2024.

Munn is now starring with Marsden, 52, in season 2 of Apple TV’s Your Friends & Neighbors. She said she was “excited” to return for the second season.

“I love the writing. The first season, when I read the script, everything was so intertwined. It all kind of came back together, and I really enjoyed the mystery of that, and I was really intrigued to play a character who has so many conflicting feelings at once,” she explained.

“You know, the feeling of regret and shame, and justification, and indignation … how do I encompass all of those feelings at once? And also drive forward through the plot line, which is, you know, trying to get back into the good graces of people who hate [my character],” Munn added.

New episodes of Your Friends & Neighbors are available to stream exclusively on Apple TV.
